Lately in the lab: Kindergarten students have been learning what living things need to survive, and got to see and touch some beetles. First graders are exploring the properties of sound, and demonstrating that sound is a vibration. Second graders are seeing how seeds get spread, and making models of spinning maple seeds. Third graders are showing how animals have life cycles, including insects. Fourth graders are discovering the differences between eyesight and perception by finding their blind spots. Fifth graders looked for evidence of a chemical reaction while making “elephant toothpaste.” Sixth graders designed and built their own balloon rockets, to demonstrate Newton’s Third Law of Motion and to get ready for assembling model rockets. Rocket Launching Day will be coming up soon!
The annual PTA science fair was last week. This was a great chance for our students to design and perform experiments that interest them. It was great to see such a great variety of topics - chemistry, plant science, engineering, and so much more. Thank you so much to the volunteers who organized, judged, ran activities, and made it a great event. A county-wide science fair, the Bergen SciChallenge, is coming up soon, on June 1. 5th graders can enter, and 6th graders can enter and be eligible to win prizes. I’ll be a judge for that, and I hope to see you there.
