Attention 5th and 6th graders: I encourage you to take part in the Bergen SciChallenge science fair in June. Here’s a flyer with the details. Explore a topic of interest to you, get feedback from real scientists, meet other students who like science, ...it’ll be a great day. That’s why I volunteer as a judge there every year. Both 5th and 6th graders can participate, but only 6th graders can move on to state and national levels.
In the lab recently, Kindergarteners used what they learned about living things to identify some real live wild animals like pillbugs in our garden. First graders demonstrated that sound is caused by vibrations by making making lots of interesting sounds. Second graders have been modeling how seeds and pollen get spread to help plants survive. Third graders are comparing life cycles of different animals. Fourth graders have been showing how weathering and erosion happen. Fifth graders demonstrated that matter is made of particles to small to be seen, and that matter is conserved when two substances are mixed. Sixth graders mapped force fields, showing how forces can act over a large area. Coming up soon: planting in the garden!
