- And 5th and 6th graders: start thinking now about a project for the Broadcom Masters science fair in June at the Bergen County Academies. I’ll remind you in the spring about this one.
In the past two weeks in the lab, Kindergarteners have been learning about sunshine, and how to build something that will protect someone from the sun. They got to use UV-sensitive beads to test their buildings. First graders have been observing the sky to learn about the sun and the moon. Second graders are comparing the properties of solids and liquids, and can tell you what makes liquids special. Third graders are making weather-measuring instruments like anemometers, which measure wind speed. Everyone is jealous of the fourth graders, who get to use my new Hot Wheels cars and tracks to test the relationship between speed and energy, and to try to get the toy cars to go through a loop without falling off. Special thanks to Mattel Inc for granting me these supplies! Fifth graders prepared for their trip to Sharpe by modeling food chains and determining if plants need soil to survive. Sixth graders have been using snap-together cubes to show how atoms combine to form molecules. We’ve dived right in to our new science curriculum and are doing lots of hands-on activities in the lab and in the classrooms, too.
