Welcome back to my blog. I put updates here around once a month to let parents and other community members know what we’ve been up to lately in the Science Lab at OPS. The lab is virtual right now, but our lessons continue. My goal is the same as always, to lead our students in hands-on science activities that foster a love of learning and curiosity about the world around them. An appreciation of the importance of science and rational scientific thinking have never been more important.
This year all Science Lab lessons will be pre-recorded, no zoom meetings. The lessons can be found with the other Special Areas. For their first lesson, Kindergarten, First and Second grade students are tasked with going outside and developing their observational skills while sorting fall leaves by appearance. Students in these grades will get a new activity around once every two weeks.
Students in grades 3 through 6 will have Science Lab every V Day, almost every Wednesday. They started the year with an online version of a room escape. They had to be observant, use logical reasoning, and analyze patterns in order to solve all the puzzles and “escape the room.” Here is a public version that anyone can work on, not just OPS students. In their next activity, they will focus on observing something and developing questions. After this, I’ll give different activities to each grade, aligned with their science curriculum. Although the Science Lab is not in person, we’ll do lots of interesting things together this year.
