Lately in the virtual Science Lab, K-2 students have been exploring the outdoors, dissecting dandelions and starting rock collections. Third graders have surveyed a local ecosystem and will design and build an animal habitat. Fourth graders expanded on their understanding of how human senses work by measuring their reaction times and making optical illusions. Fifth graders are using what they know about the properties of matter to separate materials and do a surprising experiment with a bag of water. Sixth graders are finishing up a unit on forces by experimenting with electrical and gravitational forces. I’ll continue to post a new science lab activity for each grade every other Wednesday, on the same page as the other special areas, linked on the OPS home page.
Robots are invading the Science Lab! They’re only a few inches tall though, so I think we can handle them. I belong to several educator organizations, and one of them is a branch of the Civil Air Patrol. This group promotes STEM education with grants and other resources, and they gave me a set of Sphero robots recently. I already had 2 of these from a previous year, and now I have a set of 6 Sphero SPRK+ robots and 4 Sphero Mini robots. These are great tools for teaching students computational thinking and problem solving. I’m looking forward to using them with our students next year.
