Several of the lab activities that we’ve done lately are ones you can also do at home. Doing science projects together as a family can be lots of fun. If you’re not sure about how to do something, chances are good that there’s a youtube video that can help. Kindergarten students are learning how to get ready for cold weather. First graders have been learning about the moon and stars, through modeling in the lab and observing the night sky from home. Second graders have been observing the properties of a very interesting material that I call oobleck - if you add a little water to a few cups of corn starch, you end up with something that acts like a liquid in some ways, and like a solid in some other ways. This is a very fun and easy experiment to do at home. Third graders are building model houses that can withstand severe weather. Fourth graders made string telephones and snap-together electrical circuits to convert energy from one form to another - more projects you can try at home. Fifth graders are dissecting owl pellets to better understand food chains, and sixth graders are learning how to separate mixtures into pure substances. Ask your student what they’ve been doing lately in the science lab, and maybe they can teach something to you!
