Thank you so much to the families who helped at the garden clean-up! The garden needed to have many weeds removed, and mulch put down, to prepare it for winter. The garden is a collaboration between the PTA, who provides funding and maintenance, and me, who takes the classes out to the garden in the spring for outdoor science lab lessons about plants and insects. Our students are so lucky to have this outdoor classroom. I’m very grateful to everyone who helps, especially the PTA Garden Committee chairs. If you’d like to help, keep an eye out for the next clean-up in the Spring, or send an email to [email protected] . Here’s a picture of something we found in the garden. It’s a praying mantis egg case! What have our students been doing recently in the Science Lab? Our Kindergarteners are learning about weather and the sun’s effect on us and the earth. They used special UV-sensitive beads to make a tail for a cardboard cat, then built a shelter to protect it from the sun. Because the UV beads change color in the sun, they could test if their shelters were effective. First graders are learning about the sun and the moon. We observed the sky, and are making working models of the sun, moon and earth that show they move around each other. Second graders are observing solids, liquids and gases, and exploring their properties. Third graders have been building anemometers to measure wind speed, and modeled the water cycle with colored beads. Fourth graders are doing Earth Science experiments, showing how tectonic plates move, and how volcanoes occur in patterns. Fifth graders are in an Ecosystems unit, constructing food chains and model ponds. Sixth graders are starting a Chemistry unit by making models of atoms and Element Superheroes, whose superpowers come from their element’s properties. We’ve all been very busy - please ask your child to tell you about what they’ve been doing in the Science Lab.
