Research shows that students learn best when they are engaged in hands-on activities that challenge them to use higher-order thinking skills to solve real-world problems. So to review lab safety rules in an interesting way, I created a Breakout (like a room escape, where you have an hour to solve puzzles and escape a room.) The classes in grades 1-6 had one period to find clues, solve puzzles about lab safety, and figure out how to open different kinds of locks. The teams dove right in with enthusiasm to try to decipher all the clues and open a box that had something important inside. If you have a student in grade 1-6, I hope you’ll ask them about the puzzle hunt in the science lab. Maybe they’ll want to make their own puzzle hunt! If you have a Kindergartener, you can ask them about their visit to the garden. We’ll be going outdoors again soon, because there’s a lot to learn out there.
