March is also a good time to remember Wally Schirra, Oradell’s astronaut, who was born on March 12, 1923. Schirra was one of the first humans in space, and flew in NASA’s Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.
In the OPS Wally Schirra Science Lab, we’re always doing Science to learn how the world works, and often use Technology tools, design Engineering projects to solve problems, and use Math to collect and analyze information. Here are some things we’ve been up to recently:
Kindergarteners have been pushing and pulling all kinds of things around the lab to see the effects of forces. First graders are using inspiration from the animal world to design and build tools and safety devices. Second graders are using water and sand to see how erosion happens and how they can prevent it. Third graders have begun their Ecosystems unit with cooperative activities that show how animals work together in groups to survive. Fourth graders are building a working model of the human eye to show how vision works. Fifth graders are starting a Chemistry unit with a mystery that they have to solve. Sixth graders are demonstrating Newton’s Third Law of Motion (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.) Here are some recent pictures.
