- Kindergarten has been planting sunflowers that they started from seed two weeks ago. They were amazed to see how much they’ve grown already. They also have strawberries and monarda (bee balm) in their bed from previous years.
- First grade has flowers that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators: daisies, purple coneflowers, daylilies and more. We are also helping butterflies by giving them nectar that we make from sugar and water.
- Second graders plant some things that grow quickly, like lettuce and cucumbers, and some that they will harvest in the fall, like potatoes.
- Third graders plant a pizza garden - tomatoes, bell peppers and basil.
- Fourth graders grow a Three Sisters Garden, and can explain why we plant corn, beans and squash together, since they learn Native American customs this year.
- Fifth graders have an herb garden, with perennials including lavender, lovage, and sage. Ask your fifth grader what’s special about sage.
- Sixth graders are planting native wildflowers that will be in bloom in September, after they’ve graduated, as a gift for next year’s incoming Kindergarten students.
We’ve been doing a lot of planting in the school garden. Each grade has a bed with a theme, and we’re trying to get every class to the garden at least once before the end of the year.
